The guy who sits in the cube next to mine is talking to the guy who sits in the cube across from us. They’re whispering. Which is so not subtle. Especially when the conversation opened with something like ‘she needed to be put in her place. I hope I was direct enough’. If you’re still whispering about it, my guess is you don’t think you were. I can’t hear all of what they’re saying. I admit I’m not listening too hard.
I doubt it will turn into an all-out rumble. That just wouldn’t be professional. And honestly, I’d be frightened if people started throwing punches in the vacinity of my desk. Unless I was already at home taking care of an exploded hot water heater and only had to hear about it later, but that’s not really the same as witnessing it.
But that’s one of the reasons to write and read, right? To experience things you think would be fascinating, but know would terrify/damage/cause physical harm to you in real life. And ever since this amazing revelation I had the other night, I’m dying to write a full-blown, all-out, awesomeness frosted fight scene. Complete with explosions, and magic, and gods, and heroes.
And all I have to do is turn four millenia of apathy into pent-up passion and frustration released on an unwitting god that reads more like a Scooby Doo villian and can’t really hold his own amongst Loki, Lucifer, etc.
Ought to be a blast 😀
What do you enjoy writing/reading that you would never do in real life?
Pretty much everything… I like to explore fairly dark subject matter, but I’m actually not a dark person at all (at least, I don’t think so). So most of my work deals with things I’d never do in real life.
I don’t write fights very well but I’ve only tried like once. I write all kinds of fantasy and things that we don’t see in real life like controlling electricity. And then, while I personally don’t even get the appeal of sex, I write erotica/romance. lol
@Kate – I would love to be able to write dark, but can’t sustain it for more than a short story. I don’t know why it fascinates me, but I know how you feel.
@Dawn – I’m giggling at your comment about erotica/romance. I figure one day I’ll learn how to write an epic fight scene. but if you get there first share the secret.
If you want tips then listen to the podcast “Writing Excuses”. They have a couple short podcasts out about writing fight scenes and the rest of the topics are just as good. And they have some interesting books out themselves with Dan Wells and Brandon Sanderson being two of the members that run it.
