Music is a huge part of my writing. I use it for mood, inspiration, background noise to help me focus, all sorts of things. This song is one that I’m using for a very emotional scene. The nice thing about putting something like this on paper is it’s almost cleansing emotionally. It’s wrenching to write, but when all is said and done…
I wanted to embed the Johnny Cash version as well, but it wouldn’t let me.
How does music impact your mood?
I am definitely a fan of music. I don’t have any in particular for emotional or fight scenes though. I just put together a playlist for the novel and listen to the whole thing even though certain songs are for different sections of the novel. I used to listen to Seussical the Musical whenever I wanted to feel happier cause it’s hard not to when hearing Seuss in music.
I always write to music, and generally do find it effects the mood of what I write. I like softer music to write to, often classical music or my favourite band ever, Counting Crows.
I don’t listen to music while I write much (mainly because I write while everyone else is asleep), but I do have songs that are linked to individual stories and scenes. In my new book, music is really intrinsic to it, especially a song by the Beach Boys.
I need silence when I’m writing, but I know others who’re as attached to music while writing as you are…happy writing and all the best for A-Z. Nice to meet you!
I agree – music is very powerful in shaping writing. Music often inspires scenes and ideas I have for my writing, but I’m the sort of person who gets so easily distracted that I need total silence to actually work. Sometimes I put some music on, listen to it, and then write, so I’m ‘in the mood’ to write a certain scene. Most often, that’s very sad scenes, or sometimes incredibly happy scenes. Then I have a tendency to play ‘Jump’ a few times over before I get into my writing. 🙂
I often listen to music when I write, but it never shapes my mood (at least, not that I’m aware of). The only time I select specific music is when I’m having trouble concentrating. Then, in comes the classical, or the lyricless, or the lyrics I can’t for the life of me understand (i.e. Sigur Ros).
Oh, and that is my favorite Johnny Cash song. I might even like it better than the original…
